ABOUT US HOSPITAL TEACHING RESEARCH MINI UNITS BMHT

Department of neurosurgery has performed more than 2000 neurosurgical operations from its inception since 22nd February,2001. Various neurosurgeons have rendered their services – Dr.F.B.Singh, Dr. Vyom Bhargava, Dr Ravi Kumar and Dr. Sudhir Dubeyr. Presently, Dr.Nitin Garg and Dr. Sandeep Sorte are neurosurgeons managing this department.

The department has 2 dedicated operating theatres and separate ward with 32 beds. It is equipped to deal with all major neurosurgical illnesses. It has the state of art operating microscopes, cranial and spinal endoscopes, pneumatic drills, C-arm, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, stereotaxy and minimally invasive instrumentation. Efforts are made to incorporate newer techniques and equipment so as to provide management options at par with other major neurosurgical centers of India.

 EQUIPMENT :

1.     Leica operating neurosurgical microscopes (2).

2.     Cranial and spinal endoscopy sets.

3.     CRW stereotactic frame.

4.     C-arm for intraoperative spine localization.

5.     Cavitron ultrasonic aspiration (CUSA).

6.     Midas Rex pneumatic drill system.

7.     Radionics radiofrequency ablation.

8.     Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (motor evoked potential, somatosensory evoked potential, EEG)

9.     Instrumentation for minimally invasive spine surgery (Metrx system and X-tube)

PROCEDURES PERFORMED:

BRAIN

1.Neurotrauma

2. Neuro-Oncology including pediatric neuro-oncology. (Brain tumors)

3. Skull base procedures.

4. Endoscopic brain procedures.

5. Endoscopic excision of pituitary tumors.

6. Vascular procedures as aneurysm clipping.

7. Stereotactic biopsies.

8. Functional procedures as microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, epilepsy.

SPINE

Procedures for various spine pathologies as trauma, tuberculosis, degenerative spine disorders, spinal tumors and congenital spine anomalies as dysraphism. The procedures are performed by conventional and minimally invasive techniques depending upon the cases.

Craniovertebral junction:

1.     Foramen magnum decompression.

2.     Trans-oral odontoidectomy and posterior fusion for AAD and Basilar invagination

Cervical:

1.     Anterior approach and discectomy.

2.     Anterior and dorsal foraminotomy and discectomy (disc preserving surgery)

3.     Corpectomy and fusion.

4.     Laminectomy / laminotomy.

5.     Spinal tumors including intramedullary tumors.

Thoracic:

1.     Trans-manubrial approaches to cervicothoracic junction.

2.     Transthoracic trans-pleural and extra-pleural approaches for corpectomy and fusion.

3.     Spinal tumors

Lumbosacral:

1.     Fenestration and microscopic discectomy.

2.     Spondylolisthesis

3.     Vertebroplasty for osteoporotic collapse and metastatic spine disease.

4.     Percutaneous transpedicular fixation in trauma, Pott’s spine.

Upcoming facilities:

We would soon be offering surgical procedures for our patients as Deep Brain Stimulation for patients with Parkinsonism, tremor and dystonia and neuro-endovascular procedures like coiling of aneurysms, tumors embolisation, embolisation of arterio-venous malformations, carotid artery stenting for stenosis and intra-arterial thrombolysis and clot retrieval in stroke.
