Pursuant
to the order passed by the Hon. Supreme Court of India
(SCI), the Union Carbide Corporation established a
charitable trust in London on 20th
March 1992 called "The Bhopal Hospital
Trust" with Sir Ian Percival as its sole
trustee. Honoring the recommendation of the Supreme
Court,
the Government of Madhya Pradesh granted, free of
cost, approximately 80 acres of land for the
construction of a hospital. The Union Carbide
Corporation extended limited financial support by
sale of shares and the Government of India
augmented it by waiving the capital gains tax
thereon. A high level empowered committee was set
up to guide and monitor the progress of the
project.
Following
the unfortunate death of Sir Ian Percival, a trust
called "The Bhopal Memorial Hospital
Trust" was established in accordance with the
orders of the SCI in 1998 with Justice A.M. Ahmadi
(former Chief Justice of India) as its Chairman.
This trust is committed to serve the gas victims
and to provide to them medical treatment, free of
cost. A new hospital was constructed and is run
from the funds made available and those it may generate
from non-victim patients/donors.
